In Great Expectations, Charles Dickens wrote, “Suffering has been stronger than all other teaching, and has taught me to understand what your heart used to be. I have been bent and broken, but – I hope – into a better shape.”  Growth is essential to life, but with growth often comes suffering.  Why do we suffer?  To grow?  To learn?  Because the universe is so mean, it wants to beat up on us helpless beings?  Although we would love to believe growth is this pain free, blissful experience, we must understand that sometimes growth involves pain.   Pain is a necessary part of growth.  How can one learn in life if they never go through any pain or suffering?  If you’ve never went through suffering, how can you encourage anyone else or teach them how to survive?  If you’ve never failed at anything, how can you reach the next level?
